How we handle cookies and similar technologies: what is used, why, and how you can control it.

1. What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file placed on your device (computer, phone, tablet) when you visit a website. It lets the site remember certain information, such as your preferences or how long you stayed.

We use the word “cookies” to cover similar technologies as well: browser local storage (localStorage), invisible pixels and tracking scripts.

2. Cookies used on this site

As this site launches, we use as few cookies as possible. Here is the complete list:

Essential cookies (no consent required)

  • Session cookies: they keep the site working (security, fraud prevention, and remembering accessibility choices such as reduced motion).

Third-party cookies set by embedded services

  • Google Maps: the interactive maps on the Home and Contact pages come from Google and set cookies as soon as they appear. They load automatically once you reach the section that holds them, and your IP address is sent to Google at that point. As long as you do not scroll down to the map, no request is made. To prevent these cookies, block them in your browser settings (see section 5 below). See Google's privacy policy.

No fonts loaded from a third-party server

The typefaces used on this site (Cormorant, Montserrat) are hosted directly on our own server. Unlike a site that relies on Google Fonts, your IP address is sent to no third party in order to display the text on these pages.

Audience measurement without cookies

This site measures its traffic with Plausible Analytics, a tool we host ourselves at stats.devforge.ca. It differs from the usual measurement tools on one point that concerns you directly: it sets no cookie at all and uses no identifier that could recognize you from one page to the next, or from one day to the next.

What is recorded, in aggregate form:

  • the page viewed and, where applicable, the site you came from;
  • the device type, the browser and the operating system;
  • the country, inferred from the IP address; the address itself is not retained.

None of this data can identify you, or follow you as you browse other sites. The data is hosted in Canada and kept with no time limit, in a form that cannot identify you.

3. The only non-essential cookie on this site

Law 25 requires your prior consent for any non-essential cookie. Our own tools set none: the cookies we use are technical, and our audience measurement works without any. The one exception is the Google Maps embed on the Home and Contact pages, described in section 2: it is always displayed, and Google's cookies are set once you reach the map. You can refuse them in your browser settings (section 5) without the rest of the site ceasing to work.

4. Essential or non-essential?

Cookies generally fall into two categories:

  • Essential: needed for the site to work. Without them, some functions would fail, such as remembering a display preference for the duration of your visit. These cookies do not require consent.
  • Non-essential: used for analytics, personalization or advertising. These require your explicit consent before they can be switched on.

5. How to control cookies

You can set your browser to refuse every cookie, to refuse only third-party cookies, or to warn you whenever a cookie is set. Here are the instructions for the main browsers:

Note: blocking cookies may affect how parts of the site behave, the Google Maps embed in particular.

6. Relationship with the privacy policy

This cookie policy complements our privacy policy, which describes every processing of personal information carried out on the site.

7. Changes

We may update this policy at any time, in particular when a new tool or third-party service is added. The date of the last revision appears at the top of this page.
